Kids of all ages are sure to love this next activity!
Today, we made magic shamrocks with treasures hidden inside, and getting the treasures out was all the fun! Read on for the full tutorial!
Magic Shamrocks
Materials
- Baking Soda
- Water
- Food Coloring
- Treasure
- A Shamrock mold (or cookie cutters)
- Vinegar
- Squirt Bottles or pipettes
Method
- Begin by pouring the desired amount of baking soda into a bowl. One large box will yield roughly twelve shamrocks.
- Add several drops of green food coloring if color is desired. The, slowly begin adding water and mixing, slowly adding more water and mixing until the desired consistency is reached and all ingredients are combined.
- You want the dough to be slightly damp and mold-able but not too wet.
- If you accidentally add too much water, that's ok! Just add a touch more baking soda. I used one large box of baking soda and roughly 1/4 cup of water, and that gave us the desired consistency.
- You will need a shamrock mold or cookie cutters to form the rocks. We used a silicone mold, and that worked great!
- Fill the shamrock slots roughly half way with the baking soda mixture, add treasures, and then fill the slots the rest of the way and pack tightly.
- Allow the rocks 24-48 hours to dry.
- Once dry carefully remove the shamrocks from the tray, and the fun can begin!
Magic Shamrock Play
There are all sorts of fun ways that kids can play with these amazing rocks! I hid ours around the yard so that my kids could hunt for magic shamrocks! Once all of the rocks were found it was time to get the treasures out.
I set my girls up with containers of colored vinegar and pipettes, and they had a blast using the vinegar to free the treasures!
As my girls dropped the vinegar onto the rocks the rocks bubbled, fizzed, and exploded with color!
Once the rocks started to break apart Rosie and Jewel tossed the rock pieces into the colored vinegar to completely free the treasures. This caused BIG bubbling eruptions which they thought was SO cool!
...and at the end of the rainbow.... the treasure!
Rosie and Jewel had so much fun with this simple activity. These magic shamrocks would make great favors for a St. Patrick's day party, too!
