This amazing sensory material actually acts as both! Read on to see how you can easily make quicksand play dough at home.
Quicksand Play Dough Recipe
- 1 cup of corn starch
- 1 cup of play sand
- 1-2 tsp of washable paint
- Water
Method
- Begin by mixing roughly equal amounts of corn starch and play sand in a large bin or play container.
- Slowly begin to add washable paint and mix, slowly adding more paint and mixing until the desired consistency is reached.
- The ingredients will be very sticky at first, but that's ok. Keep mixing!
- Once the ingredients are combined finish kneading the dough with clean, dry hands.
- Add the tiniest amount of water to the dough as you knead and continue to mix.
- That's it! After a bit of mixing and kneading you will be left with super fun quicksand play dough!
Quicksand Play
This play dough is mold-able, holding it's shape while kids play, but as soon as hands are still it turns to OOZE!
Leave the sand to sit, and it will melt into a doughy puddle. Pick it up to play, and you have a mold-able dough.
Seriously, so cool! Rosie and Jewel had a blast and found all sorts of ways to play with their magical, melting sand.

- Corn starch can be found in the baking aisle of most major stores or online here.
- We used light brown paint to mix our play dough so that it would be a sand-like color. You could alternatively use yellow or even white paint.
- Each time that you try this recipe it will come out just a little bit different. We recently made quicksand again using yellow paint, and we also used more of it. The results were just too fun!
- Explore the ingredients. Begin with a small amount of paint, and slowly add more as kids play! This will allow you to explore a variety of consistencies. Happy playing!
