We love coming up with fun and creative ways to make art. We have turned snow into paint before, and that was lots of fun. Today, we decided to try to make paint from rain!
There a few ways that kids can paint using rain. Today, we caught rain in jars and then used it to make watercolors. For more rain painting ideas be sure to visit the "Extended Fun" section at the end of the post.
How to Make Paint from Rain
Materials- Jars/bowls
- Food coloring
- Paper
- Paint brushes
- Rainfall
Method
- Add several drops of food coloring to a jar or container, using one jar for each color of rain paint that you wish to make.
- Set the jars outside just before it rains.
- Kids can play in the rain while they wait for the jars to fill, or they can watch the paint being made while staying dry from a window inside. We choose this option when it is cold.
- The girls had lots of fun puddle jumping while we waited for our jars to fill with rain. Once the jars were full enough the painting fun began!
Painting WITH Rain
- Give kids paper, and they will have a blast using their homemade rain paint to make art.
- You can bring the paint inside to create, or you can let kids make their art outside IN the rain! We have done both.
- If making art outside I recommend using stock board, canvas, or watercolor paper.
- Head outside with a basic watercolor set, and let kids paint in the rain.
- Place drops of food coloring on stock paper just before it rains. Then, let the rain make the "art"!
- Have kids create a piece of art. Then, set it in the rain to give the piece a "rainy day effect".
Not only did this activity allow us to paint in the rain, but we were also able to paint with rain, which Rosie and Jewel thought was so cool!

- Make rainbow rain.
- Make rain clouds in-a-jar.
- Make a skittle rainbow!
- Turn sand into paint.
- Make paint glow!
- Freeze paint.
- Make paint erupt.
- Toss paint at canvas to make art.
- Paint outside with chalk-filled balloons.
