Frozen Bubble Science for Kids
Before getting started ask kids these questions:- If you blow bubbles in freezing temperatures will they freeze?
- What happens when you blow bubbles outside in the winter?
Kids will be amazed as they blow bubbles and watch them freeze in mid-air!
Some bubbles formed amazing, frosty patterns within them!
And just like snowflakes- no two bubbles were alike.
What We Observed
Some bubbles froze in the air and then landed in perfect formation.
Some bubbles froze in the air and then shattered like an icy firework before hitting the ground.
Some bubbles formed amazing, frosty patterns within them!
And just like snowflakes- no two bubbles were alike.
My kids loved exploring with the frozen bubbles and had so much fun!
This experiment was stunning and beautiful! Who knew you could have so much fun with bubbles during the winter months?
Tips for blowing ice bubbles:
Getting the bubbles to freeze before they pop can be a bit tricky; here are a few tips we picked up along the way:
- Be patient! Not every bubble will freeze. Blow gently and keep trying! With a bit of practice your kids will be blowing ice bubbles like a pro.
- It is best do do this activity in the shade & out of direct sunlight.
- The less wind the better. Look for an outdoor space that is sheltered from the elements.
- The colder the better for this activity! I recommend trying this experiment when the temperature is below 20 degrees.
- Do you have snow on the ground where you are? Try blowing the bubbles along the surface of the snow. This worked GREAT for us!
- Try catching a bubble on the bubble wand before it freezes. Then, you can marvel at it closely.
- Can you catch a frozen bubble? Have kids try to catch them on gloved hands and the bubble wands. There is nothing like holding a frozen bubble!
Extend the Fun
- Try different types of bubble wands. Do the results vary when you use a small wand verses a larger one?
- What about a bubble gun? Will that work? Give it a try!
