We have been playing with sand in all sorts of ways, and we have been having so much fun!
Today, we combined a few common ingredients to make sand that the kids can really "sink into" this summer. Rosie and Jewel had a blast with this homemade quicksand! Read on for the full recipe tutorial.
What kid wouldn't want to play and explore in their own pit of quicksand? This activity explores a bit of science, and it is sure to be a hit with all ages.
Quicksand Recipe for Kids
Materials
- Corn Starch
- Play Sand
- Water
Method
- Begin by combining roughly equal amounts of cornstarch and play sand in a large bin or container.
- Slowly begin to add water and mix, slowly adding more water and mixing until the desired consistency is reached.
- You want the sand to be mold-able but not too wet.
- That's it. Once the ingredients are combined play can begin!
Quicksand Play for Kids
Homemade quicksand is like magic! It acts as both a liquid and a solid interchangeably. It can be molded and formed into shapes.
But, as soon as hands are still the sand will transform into ooze!
Kids can walk across the surface of the sand if they move quickly.
However, if they move slowly they will sink!

A Few Tips:
- You can add more sand for a grainier texture or more cornstarch for more OOZE. The recipe is not an exact science and exploring the materials is a big part of the fun.
