Last year we experimented with erupting pumpkins, and my kids have been intrigued to make things erupt ever since. Today, we hallowed out a few apples and tried our hand at making erupting apple volcanoes. Read on for the easy tutorial.
How to Make an Apple Volcano for Kids
Materials
- Apples cored
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
Optional additions
Method
- Begin by carefully removing the core from a few apples. Adults may need to help with this part.
- Place the cored apples into a shallow bin or container. Then, add 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda to the center of each apple.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to the apples, if desired. We also sprinkled in a bit of apple spice to give our experiment a delightful scent. This is optional.
- Give kids a cup of vinegar. Then, have them quickly pour the vinegar into the apples and step back! Kids will stare in awe as the apples erupt and bubble!
Rosie and Jewel absolutely loved this and wanted to make the apples erupt over and over again! Then, they moved on to making bubbling eruptions in the mixing cups.
