This winter play activity was "a blast!"
Combine art & science in a way like never before and make snow rockets!
If you have snow where you are you must give this activity a try! Snow makes a perfect canvas for big art, and these snow rockets will leave the entire family in awe!
A Few Tips:
Snow Rockets
Materials- Clear film canisters
- Washable paint
- Cold water
- Alka-seltzer tablets
- White poster board (optional)
- Begin by heading outside and finding a clean, fresh patch of snow to use as your play space.
- Pack the snow down so that it is firm on the surface and not fluffy.
- Lay poster board on top of the snow if desired. We did this so that we could keep a few pieces of our art.
Preparing the Rockets
- Fill each film canister roughly 1/3 of the way with cold water.
- Add a squirt of paint to each canister and stir until combined.
- Now, break alka-seltzer tablets into 3-4 pieces.
- You will want to use 1-2 pieces per rocket.
- When ready drop a few pieces of a tablet into a film canister, quickly secure the lid, and then flip the canister upside down and place it on the firmly packed snow.
- Now, step back!
- Within a few seconds the snow rockets will go flying high into the air!
- As the rockets launch the lids will fly off and the colors inside will explode in the air, leaving beautiful works of art on the snow below.
- My kids thought this was so cool and wanted to make rocket after rocket explode!
As they flew through the air the colors launched HIGH before splattering into beautiful explosions onto the snowy canvas below.
And the more rockets we launched the more beautiful our snowy canvas became!
We played & played until we were all out of alka-seltzer, and my girls are already asking when we will make snow rockets again!
