How to Make Salt Dough for Kids

- Begin by combining the flour and the salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Slowly add water and mix, slowly adding more water and mixing until a dough-like consistency is formed.
- Remove the dough from the bowl and knead it with clean, dry hands.
- Continue to knead the dough for several minutes.
- If the dough is at all sticky add a bit of flour and knead it in.
- After a bit of mixing and kneading you will be left with the most amazing craft dough, also known as salt dough.
Creating with Salt Dough
- Give kids cookie cutters so that they can make shaped ornaments.
- This is a great craft activity for every season, but we especially enjoy making Christmas ornaments.
- Use a toothpick or similar to pierce a hole in the ornaments. Then, bake them in the oven for roughly 10-15 minutes at 200 degrees.
- How long the ornaments need to be baked will vary a bit depending on the shape and size, so be sure to keep a close eye on them.
- When ready remove the ornaments from the oven and allow them to cool.
Painting Salt Dough Ornaments
- Once cool kids can use paint, glitter, and other supplies to embellish the ornaments.
- Add string or ribbon, and they are ready to be hung from the tree!
